Top Five Ways to Sneak Up on BPM

Top Five Ways to Sneak Up on BPM: "

Many organizations are being careful in demanding times and do not want to necessarily stick their heads out and take large and expensive risks. Not that BPM is real expensive, but folks I talk to are in a prudent mode when it comes to capital outlays. I would like to explore here the top five ways putting your toe in the water with BPM. I would also like to hear the ways you have seen or heard of that have been successful, to share with this community. http://blogs.gartner.com/jim_sinur/2010/04/01/the-two-paths-of-the-bpm-stream-today/

Modeling for the Masses:

Giving a process modeling capability to business and IT folks is a wonder to watch. Instinctively, they want to flow out their work streams and use it as a discussion platform. This is why Visio is so popular. Add in the strategic business context provided by capabilities provided by VisionWaves and Nimbus and others, this becomes a powerful place to start. To read more on this approach search for Bill Rosser’s writings on modeling for the masses.

Try BPM in the Cloud:

Not only can you use BPM in the cloud for modeling and collaboration on target process models, but for execution. The cloud is not only great for a proof of concept(POC), but for running a process early in it’s benefit stream. The savings in operating costs can be applied for a capital expenditure later. This is a very clever way of starting BPM and letting it self fund.itself.

Water the SharePoint Patch:

SharePoint is everywhere and a great way to start a BPM effort. It is good enough to prototype processes and educate folks on the value of processes management and naturally learn about iterating to better processes. You might run into limitations and issues, but it is a logical start for organizations that do not want a capital outlay.

Process Intelligence:

Watching how people and systems behave give business folks powerful information about how to do things better and more cost effective and time efficient manner. In addition, better practices can evolve as processes become more social and dynamic in a mobile world. PI holds plenty of future benefits and is an easy way to start.

Active Documentation:

Are you interested in guiding your workers through their daily activities in a meaningful way while documenting what is going on? Certainly you can use traditional modeling and documentation tools, but I would suggest documentation that executes and give guidance on how to better use what you currently have is a viable way to start BPM.  The side benefit is that you are ready for the retirements that may come after the downturn runs it’s course.
